i replaced my engine last weak. now i got a 2002 engine on my 1996 max :clapping: but **** :bang head: the engine sounds like it wants to start but will not! :bang head: plugs are coming out wet with fuel! every few starters i get a boom from egsos! sound like it's missing a spark :confused2:
question: where there any changes made on cdi or the egnition system???:ummm:

If you had the wrong pickup coil you would not have been able to plug it in. The wires are orange and black for the correct one for your year.

Was the engine complete or did you have to do some assembly?

hi sean
i got a complete engine no essembly was needed.
all wires and conections pluged in perfect.
i have sparks in all 4 plugs and fuel getting to all 4 too.
to me it sounds like the cdi if ****** or a bad egnition coyle, but i changed both a year ago!

Sounds like a crossed pair of spark plug leads or coil leads.

:biglaugh: yap :biglaugh: no :biglaugh: that's not it :biglaugh: i tried to cross them also :clapping:

Mine wouldn't start last year and I would get a backfire after cranking the engine that made a 12 gauge sound like a cap gun. After all of my worries and days stress It just came down to draining all 4 carby bowls and a new battery. I actually think that it was just the battery, the old one just wasn't cranking the engine quite fast enough. I discovered it only after killing the battery trying to start it and then hooking up my charger to get it to fire up the first try. After replacing the battery all has been well since. It sounds too simple, but sometimes it is. Of course sometimes it isn't.

You may have problem with the carbs

Also check all carb boots for vacuum links

I had a similar issue when I changed my Pickup coil. I did not know that the wires leading from the coil where polarized + and -. I was pissed after all that work. it would just crank and crank and sounded like it tried to catch. I would get maybe 1 revolution without the starter being pressed, but that was it.. Plus it had a loud knock that I never heard before.. Very disturbing to hear this new noise.. Sounded like it was messing up the engine or something... Out of curiosity, I took small jumper wires to invert the coil wire connector under the seat. Basically swapping the positive to the negative and vice-versa. Push the starter and Varooooom!!!.. Sweet sound of success... So instead of taking the side cover off, de-soldering everything, I ended up taking a small hobby knife to free the blade connector out of the housing, and invert the wires. So far, all is well. (3 years so far).

So.. If for any reason, I sell this engine,, the new buyer will have the same problem you're having.

Hope this sheds some light on your issue..

:biglaugh: tnx man :clapping: i will shure check that tommorow :punk: i didn't think of this option :biglaugh::clapping: graet info man :biglaugh: tnx

Same thing if my battery isnt totally charged up, cranks and then backfires just as you let go of the starter button.
Solutions are: fresh hot battery, 4 pole starter upgrade if by chance you still have a 2 pole, solder the "crimp" where it branches off to the regulator or better yet upgrade to the mosfet. Make sure ALL the ground wires are good, i bet if you connect a pair of battery jumpers to another battery it may fire up and run.
I made a dedicated 6 gauge wire straight from the negative to the starter mount bolt, also made a new bigger starter cable as well. Check the fuse holder for loose terminals.

thank u all guys it's all good now, it was just a cuople of crossed coil wires!!!
big up to d-max2012 for being the man!!! tnkx to u dude i found what was wrong :) cheers

Been there done that! Glad you were able to sort it out, with a little help from your friends at Vmaxforum.net!

You are welcome brother.. I've gotten a TON of help from the guys on this forum.. Just glad I could be counted as one of many that has helped another.

Now I have to wait for the snow to melt along the side of the house to get my bike out front. Hopefully I can get to work on it this weekend.:eusa_dance:

I just cleaned up and repaired a wiring harness to replace the fire damaged one on my Vmax.
I learned that you can push a very small jewler's flat screwdriver in the tiny slot that is parallel, next to the blades in the connector housings, to unclip the blade and pull it out of the housing for cleaning or wire end repairs.

I was amazed and apalled at how many hidden crimp splices there is in a stock Vmax wiring harness!
