Last year, when changing out my fork oil, I tried the ATF option, and HATED it. Don't remember what brand, nor for sure did I know exactly what it's viscosity was, but I hated it. Totally wrong handling characteristics when I went down the road. I ended up buying regular 10w fork oil and replacing the ATF after only a month or so. I still have the OEM springs and run 10psi in them.

I may go to regular fork oil if i can't find bg. I replace the oil every 2 years anyway.

Too harsh? Too soft?

What specifically?

Apparently, full syn powers fluid is a white unicorn. Advance Auto and a couple of other places didn't have it and weren't aware there was such a beast.

Mark,In Ma, they, Advanced Auto, have it only as ATM fluid. There is a store brand, then Valvoline makes it along with a few others.

Steve, I bought MasterPro full synthetic from O'Reilly's. The Mazda dealer had BG power steering fluid but wanted $70 per half gallon.

Cheers,

Mark

Too harsh. Felt like the front end would come apart. Hitting bumps too hard. Had me 2nd guessing how much oil I poured in each fork leg when replacing.

Just what I wanted to know - thanks.

This is exactly how mine felt. I had the OEM springs and one fork had what appeared to be conventional ATF and the other fork had what looked loke fork oil. It was quite nervious and overly harsh, rough roads were unbearable. ATF with OEM springs were a definate loosing combo on mine too, w/ or w/o air psi.

I reassembled using synth import ATF, progressives, new OEM seals and dust covers according to Seans video, 0 psi, preload consistent with OEM. Its not the same bike anymore, I no longer dread my 3 mile dirt driveway or corners.
