The Sealmate has worked for me many times.

It's cheap and there is nothing to lose by trying it.
I bought one a few years ago but haven’t had to use it yet. No issues since replacing the stock springs with Racetech 12 years ago. Stock springs are junk and hard on oil seals. Replacing fork oil every two years and cleaning the insides are crucial too. All IMO.

Is it just me thinking that you could make a similar device by cutting a piece of milk plastic carton to shape with a small slot to catch the dirt?

Back in the day, people used to say to use 35mm film negatives to do the same thing this seal mate does.
