Picked up an '06 last week with 2K miles on it. Was curious about how to check the vboost for proper operation. I can hear it before I start the bike. When crusing around in 1st and it gets to about 7K RPM I can feel a little kick but it is not nearly as violent as expected. I was expecting the front wheel to fly off the ground and do the same in 2nd. As it is it barely floats just before I shift into 2nd. All in all the bike is awesome but I was just expecting it to be a bit more extreme when the vboost kicked in. In 2nd-5th there is no lift. I can feel it accelerate quicker around the 7K RPM level but, as I said earlier it feels a bit more mellow than expected. I'm not sure if it is running correctly or I am just expecting it to be too much like a 2 stroke dirt bike when the "power band" kicks in and the front wheel just goes flying up in the air. Don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing the max. This is my first max that I bought used from a private owner and don't have anyone around to compare my performance with.

Sounds like it's probably running well. These bikes have built up a reputation over the years that may have over built it for you. Once you get a header and jet kit the bike really wakes up.

Been thinking about it. Hoping to get myself out to the UFO track day, it's not far from where I'm at. I would like to see and hear some of the different pipes in person. I prefer the look of the 4-2, than the 4-2-1. It looks more balanced on the bike. I actually really like the look of the stock setup but the weight, performance, and sound are a bummer. My main concerns about getting a new exhaust (besides the money) are making sure the carb is set up correctly afterwards. I'm no carb wizard. I have no problems with splitting the cases on my dirt bikes and rebuilding in the basement with no issues but for some reason I don't get along well with adjusting carbs. I don't have anyone to learn that kind of stuff from. I guess now that I'm on the web I can find out a lot of useful tips though. I've always been a tear it apart and repair via the manual kind of guy and the results have been good so far.

I think it's running pretty good. Vboost doesn't open fully until around 7000 rpms. You can always take your carbs off and sync your vboost to make sure the boost butterflies are fully opening.

Check the slack adjustment too for the servo and butterflies cable.I have seen them very loose before.

I know of 2 guys that know these carbs real well that are close to you.I live in Butler and Paul Czernics lives in Pittsburgh. He has the best sounding exhaust in my opinion but it is no longer made.Mine sounds fairly good as well.

The whole vboost thing is really overated I think in the Rep it's built up over the years..

I've run across a few people that were convinced that the Vmax they saw back in the 80's could pull a wheelie in a 5th gear roll on at 70mph.........

It's still a 600lbs+ bike only making 115 or so HP,,,sounds like yours is running about right.....most exhaust sytems will run just fine without any jetting changes...You won't hurt anything but you might be leaving 3-4 horsepower on the table by not jetting......

If you really want the front wheel up just leave it in 1st getting rolling to about 5500 rpms, snap the throttle closed and then immediately wide open...If your traction is good it'll come right up...

Be sure to grab second while your up there so you can let it down easy..

PS,
If you need advice on changing fork seals I've got lot's of experience:biglaugh:

Your V-Boost is working dude. So many people swear the V-BOOST is so awesome:confused2: and its a thrill to them when it kicks in.:ummm: (Depending on what your used to) Jumping off a 50CC scooter onto a VMAX hell yeah its bads ass!!! To be honest I bypassed my V-BOOST so its always open to get a lopey idle. Dont waste your money on the T-Boost mod what it does it opens vboost at 3K rather than 6K
No the vmax isnt going to power lift your front wheel maybe in 1st you will get power wheel lift around 7500+
Its a 600 lb motorcycle with a long wheelbase and a lot of the weight is near the front. Its not a 250 2 stroker that weighs 225LBS. with a strong power band.
The VMAX was a fast motorcycle back in its day of 85. Its a fun bike to ride, its torquey, it sounds awesome. If your comparing it to todays 1K sportbikes performace numbers on paper you will be dissapointed.
Just go ahead and install NOS on it, it makes it more exciting.:punk:

whats wrong with you guys Vmaxes? I am a big dude and my Vmax will pull the wheel in first gear buy grabing the throtle. Some times it is more than others. Mine will also spin the tire in first buy just grabing the throttle.(I did not realize this was happening at first. I was ridding with a group of friends at about 20 mph I passed a motor home(full throtle in first) when we got to our next brake my buddies said nice burn out it spun all the way through first. Plus it wheelies shifting to second under load. I am not a big fan of wheelies so i do not let the wheel hang for to long. BTW when it doesn't wheelie in first I assume it is spinning.

I think that's pretty much normal, all the decent running maxes will do that, in 1st it either bites and lifts or spins like crazy. The thing that's being disputed here is all the crap about pulling the front wheel off the ground in a 3,4,5th gear roll on from speed......
