I work for Intelsat doing video/data operations. The short story is setting up to transmit or receive from satellites for both video and data for domestic/international distribution. The shorter story, is I watch a lot of tv.

I'm a Broad Band Technition IV for Suddenlink. Yeah, i'm "tha cable guy". I'm responsible for over 150mi of Hybrid Fiber/Coax plant in two systems(Snyder, TX and Sweetwater, TX). I don't install cable, though i do sometimes do trouble calls at the customer premisis. Normally i'm the guy that gets called when ANYTHING happens in either plant(from customers house to our MTC) that affects more than a few customers up to and including the entire plant. This includes analog and digital tv, high speed data and telephony(VOIP). After 10yrs experiance in systems needing fires put out daily, i've pretty much seen/done it all so i'm very comfortable and don't get worried about the what if's. Being on call sucks and due to my paticular experiance(i was literally thrown to the wolfs the first 5yrs), i even get the wonderful opportunity of being called when i'm NOT on call! I drive around in a bucket truck most of the time though i do sling a latter some. I've gaffed more poles than i care to recall as well, though the industry is shying away from gaffing. Insurance is very good which is why i'm still here(I've two small kiddos ya know!)
Though i'm with a large company, i'm not worried about any cutbacks/lay offs. My paticular job is one that can not be removed or shuffled in with another, and they REALLY rely on me getting the job done in a timely manner. Being kinda remote, its too far to send help when something goes wrong. You guys know how mad ya get when the internet goes down, don'tcha?! Trust me, your not alone...!

Currency Automation Engineer for the Federal Reserve Bank. I love my job, I basically goto work to relax and work on VMAX stuff.
I didnt realize that we are putting in a job description.. Ok
I basically sit in an office for 10 hours a night 4 days a week waiting for one of my 8 operators to screw up either the currency processing machine, the PC, network.
The currency processor I am in charge of is about the size of a Chevy Suburban truck. It scans 33 bank notes (bills) a second. On an avg. night the processor can scan 1.1 million notes, during this process each note is being scanned for graffiti, tears, length, thickness and other authenticty features I cant share due to confidental information. The processor is operating with 3 OS's and has a total of 16 controllers, 4 module controllers, 6 Real Time Controllers with DC stepper motors, 3 phase AC motors, PLC's, Pneumatics, with a million rollers and bearings. The PC used to balance and troubleshoot with is a Windows 95 OS base yes its old school!! Its a bad ass machine and very complexed. The training that was involved was 16 weeks and it was hardcore! It usually takes the avg Engineer 2-3 years to feel comfortable with the machine. Overall its a great German designed machine with very little tolerence for error. If you are precise in fixing **** and perform the required maintanence it runs 99.4 availabilty each month. I am proud to say that Nashville Federal Reserve Bank is always in the top 3 in the country for production, cause I am so great ! LOL :clapping:
No we dont make money we shred alot of it though. At nights we only run 1's and about 400,000.00 of them are shredded in one night...

Computer Technician for a Native American Community/ two gaming casinos. Responsibilities are loading software, installing and troubleshooting computers, printers, ticketing kiosks, webcams, and audio systems.

Retired from teaching high school eight years ago. I paint, and I write fiction, now. I also teach part time to finance way too much golf and tennis. Every night is Friday night, and every day is Saturday.

Radiation Protection Supervisor at a Nuclear Waste processing/storage site. Just to answer the question up front.... No nothing glows LOL.

In a former life I was a nuclear licensing engineer for three different power plants here in the U.S. And, I have stood over the reactor and seen the glow during refueling. Nothing cooler.

Nice. I'm currently playing the Army game in Afghanistan. I'm a medic, if you didn't get that from the name. I love what I do, but I hope to take it to the next level soon. I'm finishing up my pre-med degree and hoping to start med school within the next three years. This trip to Afghanistan (as well as re-enlisting over here) paid for the new Max that'll be mine in February. Thank you, taxpayers!

Good plan-hope it works out for you!!
you with the 101? spent a few years with them. 28 months in Afghanistan myself working a CA medical mission(s). I was the MSC Operations guy and Det Cdr 1/2 the time. Once we set up I was basically an overpaid Vet Tec. got to see most of the country. also probably the highest paid LMTV/MTV/5T driver there as well.

if you need/want anything let me know.

Software guy for 30 years at a company that just OEMed all produces from a foreign source. Got a good severance package and am pounding the pavement now. Sucks out there now for prospects, people are being very cautious. Wish I could retire now, but I still have 1 in high school, the other two are off my books now. I figure 5-10 more years in the workforce. I'd consider doing something new, but am good at software and really like it. I don't like the idea of moving, but will think about it as time passes. I guess I could follow the jobs overseas, but what the ****!

I really hate what Bush did to this country, weakened and disgraced it in so many ways! As much as I don't like an Obama in the white house, I don't see how he can do worse than the mess that Bush left for us and our kids to clean up. Lets do our jobs with pride and real meaning.

Best of luck to all,
Steve

Not to hi-jack this thread, but what did Bush do to cause all of this. I think we need to blame congress and the people of this country who live beyond their means. I'm in no way implying that Bush is a good president.... but besides going to war, what can the President do by himself. No child left behind was a good idea (in theory) but the funding is not there and should have never been rolled out. I feel eople are too eager to point the finger at the easiest target (the president) but haven't done the investigation as to what the real causes are. Maybe I'll start a new Politics thread, and hope to keep it out of the junk yard:clapping:... I'm in terested in talking to others, basically because I see things from my point of view and like the opinions of others to help "open my eyes".

Inside Salesman for a company called State Electric Supply. We are a full service electrical distibutor from residential to Industial and Automation. Basically I sit at a desk 10 hrs a day 5 days a week and answer phone calls and play on the computer. it has its ups and downs just like everything else.

Merchant Marine. I am a AB/Tankerman on an ocean going tug/barge hauling bulk oil products in the Gulf of Mexico & Atlantic up the east coast of Florida, with some trips to Puerto Rico & Bamahas. Love my job, but the downside is how dangerous of a work environment it can be. On the up side, I make great money & only work 182 days a year. That leaves me 183 days at home to ride my Max. Any days I work over equals more accessories I can buy for the Vmax.

Over 12 years as a Facility Maintenance Employee for Con-way Truckload (formally CFI) headquarters. I jump between 5 buildings that range from 240,000 sq ft to 30,000 sq ft on a 160 acre complex.

I either repair, supervise or maintain all the electrical, lighting, HVAC systems, DDC controls, fire suppression systems, security system, elevators, gate controllers just to name a few. Burned out, but it pays the bills.

my uncle does this for yellow freight

Accountant...working on my CPA. Just graduated from college in May 2008. I am 29 years old. What have I been doing? High School, Marine Corps (Harrier electrician for 5 years), AMI (now wyotech in Daytona), worked various jobs, got a degree. Do I like it? It pays great, there will always be a need for me, but it is still a desk job and that bugs me. I like to work outside and I love to turn wrenches.

I'm not with the conventional Army. I've been over here since May, and I'll be headed home in mid-January, only to come back over here in July for another seven months. We work pretty closely with the CA guys, a good bunch they are. As a medic over here, I have a lot of jobs. Everything from running a local national clinic, to direct action missions, and everything in between.
And there aren't many LMTVs (or HMMWV's for that matter) over here now. Everyone is going to MRAPs (Mine Resistant, Ambush Protected vehicles. Costing about $1.5m a pop, and weighing in at 45,000lbs. They've saved my life a couple times.
