You are correct there was no 87 model imported to the USA, but Canda and Europe got the 87, not many were made arounf 640 that year, how do i know? I own an 87 Vmax same color as your 88, but a few differencesRecall it was 'the hot bike' that year. They sold over five times what they expected to.
As to bikes per state, places w/low populations & short riding seasons won't sell as many as Sun Belt states with top-15 in population rankings or someplace like MI which has high sales for things like bikes, boats, and trailers. Dealers buy what sells. And where it sells.
Also recall in the USA market there was no '1987' Vmax Left-over '85 & '86 models filled the demand and as they got scarce, the market was primed for the 1988's. The other manufacturers also didn't bother trying to contest things: bye-bye Madura, Sabre/Magna, Eliminator.
No Vmax emblems on the side covers. You are correct there was no 87 model imported to the USA, but Canda and Europe got the 87, not many were made arounf 640 that year, how do i know? I own an 87 Vmax same color as your 88, but a few differences
1- different needle jets

I just picked up serial number 1FK – 001016. So the 916th Bike but what market was the one FK built for this bike cost me $500 it has been sitting outside for 12 years so she’s very rough condition, but I will make her a runner again, how can I find out what her original paint color was since this one has been re-sprayed
Yep, I was confused because I saw amethyst paint on the fender, but no stickers underneath the airbox cover, but there was rubber pads there that I took off and found the Scarlet red underneath it. The rear fender had amethyst, but thinner took it off and underneath the amethyst was the Scarlet red. So if these were not the original covers, how would one find out the original color?Peel-up one of the stickers on the faux tank cover, and you should be able to see the OEM paint. Depending upon how the paint was applied, you may be able to remove a fender and see underneath or somewhere else on the fender what the original paint color was,
There are posts of the paint colors by year, Use the search function. I posted some, so you can use my screen name to narrow the search.
