My Brother Diabetic Issues

Well good news of sorts came back from the heart cath testing; while his current condition did not warrant any present action it revealed that his long years of smoking and having had type 1 diabeaties that there is plax(sp?) buildup is all of the arteries and vessels around his heart. Since he had a stint installed 7 years ago that area was the cause of the minor heart attack that he experianced this past week but it was on a minor vein so he was lucky in that respect. The doc said he should have been on a asprin-a-day regimen and taking a cholestrol med to help control build up around his heart, but he was not taking anything nor regularly seeing a heart or regular physician! :bang head:
So now comes the recovery which he is tasked with quiting smoking (pack a day) and having to take 5 new meds to get his system back into reasonable control. The doctor also told him to take breaks/ vactions so he can get away from the everyday work stress. His boss told me he has so much time built up for vacation and sick time he is not accruing any more time!!!! Jim mentioned that he met him a few years ago at the Icebreaker and that was the last vacation he had taken!!! :confused2:
Ok, I am rambling a bit here but am somewhat relived with the news. We may still be able to go home yet today (arg, 2.5 hour ride home on a 2 lane rd) but it will be good to get home and have my bro back in better health.

Glad to hear that the situation is better than what the initial thought was. Any time you and him want to get away my door is always open and Jodi and I have rooms for you both!!! Tell him we said hello and wish him well.

Very good news Brian, I'm so glad you could get some positive info on the situation. The meds will work wonders for him, exercise is a great pacifier also!

Great news Brian, best bet is to follow The docs advice to the letter. Glad your Brothers on the right track. Type 1, and I'm sure 2, are a life time chore. The smokes and drinks? CAN'T.

Tell him to try the Patch, it worked for me years ago when I quit smoking.
Sadly, I started smoking again during my divorce.

Well we are back home again from Marquette Hospital and the heart specialist. It was confirmed that he had a mild heart attack as was expected. His a1c blood test showed a 9.3 reading, not taking meds to control his cholesterol, smoking, and work stress. The doctor really laid into him about not following the previous meds prescribed confused2 when he had the stint inserted 7 years ago. So the doctor has prescribed 3-4 weeks of R & R from work so I am going to try to convince him to ride down to my brother in Sparta, MI for a visit, a gun club "turkey shoot"(17th), and some riding with Beekeeper and 2Fear. I hope it convinces him that vacations are a good thing!

Best wishes for your brother to make a speedy recovery. As a diabetic, I know exactly what he is up against. He must have a strong will to live in order to do whatever it takes to get, and keep his blood sugar under control. It's not easy being a pin cushion, poking your fingers 6 times a day and taking insulin shots 4 times a day. But he must face it. It's taht, or a long dirt nap.
