It's strange you say that Apple supports their computers so well, since their warranty coverage on iPods is virtually non-existent. I won a iTouch and fortunately haven't had any issues with it, but pretty much everybody I know that has an iPod has been told off by Apple when it breaks----must be user abuse for a physical malfuntion, or running 3rd party software/firmware if it crashes. I looked at the "Apple care" program shorly after I got the itouch, mainly due to the reputation if iPods to be unreliable. The only thing it covered was "defects in workmanship as deemed by Apple" for a set amount of time. Not accidental damage, not firmware issues, nothing. It's just a longer warranty, and from what I've heard, that warranty is useless anyway.
I must assume they support their computers better. And that's also why I ordered a custom through Xotic rather than a Dell, HP, ect. Apple's right about those, customer service is a nightmare. Call center in India on a staticky VOIP line with some dude who has no idea about anything, and I know quality on mass-produced machines is generally lower. The nice thing about Xotic is you dial their number, and instantly an American person picks up the phone....once it was the owner of the company. Customer service was absolutely phenomenal....the people I talked with were knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. I believe my laptop came with a 2-year warranty on everything, and lifetime free support(that actually helps). It's neat, when you call, they greet you with your name, and know exactly what was in the computer you ordered. They also stock parts for no-longer-produced machines they made, so upgrading or replacing a component is easy.
Most laptops are built by one of a few main manufacturers. Most, if not all Apple laptops are built by Asus as a "barebones" system(screen, chassis, keyboard but no internal components). Same goes for PC's as well....Dell, HP, Toshiba, Sony. Check this out- "Who really makes laptops":

My laptop is a Sager NP5793, which is manfuactured by Clevo. No brand-name markup- an Alienware with similar components would have cost nearly $2500. That's why I bought an Xotic- Fantastic value for the price and a very good reputation for quality and service.
