I don't know where else to vent, so why not here?

I've been stung twice now with Magnavox DVD recorders. The first one I had just a few months, and then it started showing a "disk error" and will not recognize any DVDR's - no matter the type, speed, or brand. That cost me for some troubleshooting! So I bought a new Magnavox DVD recorder at Wal-Mart for about $75. That one now completely shuts down after I put ANY disk in it, regardless if it is a DVD-R, DVD+R, movie, whatever! There's more to the story that adds to my frustration, but suffice it to say - stay away from Magnavox!!! What CRAP. :real mad:

As much as I hate to say it.......

I buy the cheapest bit of electronics I can get that will do the job......

When it quits I go buy another one.....

I currently have a Magnavox DVD player......bought it at WAL-MART......

It looks like they took a computer DVD drive and put it in a small case.... it's just a little thing......

Looks kinda dumb in the entertainment center but it works and I think I paid 25 bucks for it......

The first one I bought did not work at all from day one......returned it for this one.....I think it's been a year......still works......

Like everything else you buy today it's all junk......

Save receipts..... pay attention to warranties.....and spend as little money on it as possible.....

Unfortunately......this also applies to large home appliances as well.....

I spent BIG money on Maytag washer and dryer.....lasted 4 and a half years....

3 year warranty......repairs were going to cost more than a new washer....:confused2:

Brand names and reputations don't seem to apply anymore......

My parents have had a Maytag for 20 years.... I've had my scratch and dent Maytag for 9.5 years and no issues.

I'd buy Kenmore now. I have some of those I really like too.

Interesting discussion..

1.) Buying cheap electronics (or anything else made in other countries) supports foreign countries and their growing economies.

2.) Buying EXPENSIVE electronics - such as cell phones / ipods and items of that nature - also made in foreign countries - creates an elite market of "what the market will bear..." - instead of paying for the product +20% which used to be a standard for pricing a product. People are paying hand over fist for these products.

You know what those two points tell me?
There IS a market for items MADE here in the American market - and people have proven they are willing to pay for a quality product.

The punch line? Build a product people actually want - and sell it reasonably priced. Let the chinese make their 20 dollar DVD players. America should be able to make a 40 dollar DVD player that lasts.

Years ago maganavox was a quality product....now they (like almost all electronics) are manufactured in chinese sweat shops with little or no quality control. They prefer quanity over quality. Its sad to see the manufacturing base that made this country so strong, go to the curb. The chinese basically own the U.S.. We have borrowed so much money from them, they could collapse our economy at a moments notice by calling in the notes!!!

Your theory is sound......but the reality is different.....

The profit margin on the 20 dollar foreign crap is WAY higher than the margin on the 40 dollar domestic product.....

It is no longer about a quality product........or value for a dollar......or a good reputation......

It's about putting money in a shareholder's pocket......He doesn't even know what you do or make......he doesn't care either......

How much MONEY did you make me TODAY......That's what your business makes today....MONEY.....not cars or washers or DVD players or paint....

The old mom and pop stores and companies answered to their customers.....

Now these stores and companies don't even know you.....and they sure as HELL do not care about you.........unless you own stock.....

Sorry for the rant...

Well, I would personally like to see more products made here in the west. I know I would buy a GOOD product and pay a little more for it than the chinese / taiwan counterpart.

Another thing that is essential is buying local food. Sure - it's great to get cheaper mass produced fruit and veggies - from all over the world - but that system may fall apart someday - and we will be left hanging without means to feed ourselves locally.

Not to mention creating jobs!! Local jobs! Getting quality food!
(I shop at farmers markets frequently).

All this reminds me of the old areosmith song ... somethin' wrong with the world today...

Yeah.....but we know what it is....

I agree....I will spend more to get a quality product made domesticly.....

But when it is all foreign made.....

I still wear my old Harley leather jacket......made in USA.....Nice jacket.....
The junk they sell today??? Forget it......

If a US product is equal or superior....and not tremendously more expensive...I will buy it......they are few and far between:confused2:

My country is selling out our resources to every foreign buyer walking in the door.

Yikes!!!

I am still astounded with the oil sands deal.....

I ain't no bunny lovin' tree hugger.....

But wow.....just wow...:confused2:
