I think the Cycle-Shell retails in a size for our bikes for ~$325-375 depending on the height, you do not need the big one w/the extra hoop. That is for the porker H-D's. It is well-made and easy to use. I am about to replace the fabric on mine which they sell for less than 1/2 of the entire unit. Here is a response I got from them about fabric replacement:

You can replace just the cover for $150 for the Sport and the Cruiser, $175 for the Tourer, which includes the shipping in the US except Hawaii. There are instructions for replacement and it would take about 2-3 hours to complete if you follow the instructions explicitly.
You can also purchase a new cover and frame structure already assembled and it would take about 15 minutes to replace. That will cost $200 for the Sport and the Cruiser, $225 for the Tourer and the shipping is the same as if we were shipping a complete CycleShell because of the size of the box. Usually $95 to a business or $125 to a residence in the US except Hawaii. But please send us a zip code for a more accurate shipping quote.

As to the Dowco model, I forget the unit I bought, I think it was about $70 out the door. It is heavier material than most, and is a quality product.

I have one of those too and forget which bike I bought it for, but it fits OK. It doesn't fit to the tires' contact patches but it does cover about down to the axle line

Thanks Fire-medic! I will definitely look into a cover from Dowco. I was just unsure of size. I know my dad's Honda ST 1300 cover looked massive on the bike. As for the shell, I won't be needing that. The Max will sleep in a garage.

Picked up the bike and took it for 120 mile ride today. I absolutely love the bike on the open road. Vboost is amazing... couldn't stop smiling the whole ride.

Anyways, here are some actual pics of the bike.

Looks like a good, clean ex. of the marque. A bit of fixing on the clutch cover shows it's been ridden a fair amount, so probably no issues from 'setting-up.' About the only non stock thing I saw was what look to be clear lollipop lenses. Stock is good, easy to fix, nothing too-ragged-out or butchered.

Riding on prairie grass, it's easy to get the bike sideways from too-much throttle. Then all you have to do is rig a seed broadcaster to dispense the product into the furrow. Planting was never so-much fun! Looks like a nice day, big cumulus clouds, a great day for riding a new bike.

It wasn't the best day for riding but I still racked up 120 miles on her haha. It was super windy out but the camera didn't show the windmills in motion. Even so I was very impressed with the bike in windy conditions. I also was pleasantly surprised with the handling and braking of the Max. After reading all the reviews and complaints of the handling and braking, I thought it would be a pig through corners. With my riding skill I won't be able to keep up with RRs but the Max was actually pretty decent. However keeping up with RRs isn't a worry for me.

As for riding on the grass, I wasn't drifting around lol. I was pretty cautious not to dump the bike.

As for the bike's clutch cover, I don't know why it shows that much wear. The bike has only 3100 miles on it...:confused2: I guess it sat in the show room for almost a year and people getting on and off of it.

I'm actually surprised how few Vmax's are around Calgary and bikes like it. Mostly where I live, there are two different bikes. If you are over 30 then you buy a H-D with tons of chrome and if your under 30, you buy a RR sport bike.

Thanks for pointing out some of the mods the previous owner did to the bike. I would have never noticed the different tail lights.

Now it is time for some accessories before I go on a big trip next year on the max.

1. Saddlebags that can hold (2) 2.5 gallon Jerry cans
2. Possibly a tiny windshield

For the windshield, I don't want anything big or ugly, just something to keep the wind off of my chest/neck. Any suggestions? (I'm 5' 8" if that makes any difference)

I run the "Givi A123" Flyscreen, looks great and keeps the wind off your chest................Leave it to Fire Medic to school the rest of us on proper seeding techniques V-Max style!.......:rofl_200:........Tom.
 
Clear turn signal lenses are stock on 2006 and 2007 models. Prob on earlier ones also.

I haven't come close to an '06-'07 that I know of other than on the pages here. I knew they made 'em, but that's about it. So stock they are! :worthy:

Search under "windshield," "windscreen," "fly screen," and you will find lots of info.
 
I have a Yamaha flyscreen I'll sell ya for $75 + shipping. It's in very good condition with only a few very minor scratches.

That is a good deal, and if you want to get a taller shield, here are some options:

In the meantime you would have the hardware you need. The GIVI is a nice product too. I have the stock Yamaha fly screen and also an aftermarket which can easily be mounted/removed.
 
Thanks for all the replies guys. I racked up almost 600 miles on the max now. I absolutely love it... except for riding into a head wind haha. It feels like my helmet is going to get sucked off of my head. I am surprised how grabby the clutch is. When I let the clutch out when shifting gears it chirps the rear tire sometimes.

Now just on to saddle bags. Anyone have experience with the Tourmaster Cruiser III slants and jerry cans? I like the look of those saddle bags.

Just had another question for you guys.

What tires do you guys run on the bike? The tires have gone through a lot of abuse since I started riding the max and it will need a new rear tire next year. Any suggestions? Also, I am not interested in swingarms and making my tire wider. Stock or a tiny bit wider than stock works for me.

Does anyone run Pirelli tires or more "performance" tires on the max? I seen on the FAQs a popular choice is a Metzeler Marathon ME880 in a 170 width.

Once I replaced it with the PCW kit it'd chirp it if you snapped it out on a shift.

The 170 Metzeler is definitely one of the more popular choices. It'll handle much better than the stock dunlops. I got like 7-8k miles out of a rear tire as well. Hard/fast riding, but keep the wheelspin to a minimum.

You sure you're going to need jerry cans? The Max has a fairly short range, but it's not unmanageable. There's not many areas where the gas stations are 100+ miles apart. And usually after 100 miles your butt needs a break from the stock seat anyway.

The bike had a bit over 12k miles when I bought it. The original clutch crapped out around 25k...started slipping badly whenever you got on the gas.

When I replaced it, I used PCW's kit, which is a stiffer spring, and an extra set of frictions, to replace the 1/2 disc "anti chatter" ring with a full normal disc. After this, the clutch grabbed better than it ever had.

You'll have to experiment with your bike to get a feel for the range. Get a 3 liter bottle (that the cheap store brand sodas come in), drink or otherwise dispose of the sugar water....maybe drop a pack of mentos in it and sit it on top of a really ugly car?, clean and let it dry. Now you've got a great no-leak emergency gas can. The neck on 2 liters is too small to put a pump nozzle into, the 3 liters have the wide mouth that are much easier to fill. Plus, you get the container (and 3 liters of mediocre soft drink) for usually around a dollar. A tiny safety gas can is often $10-$15, and it'll leak gas everywhere as the "spill proof" cans inevitably do. Due to the recessed filler neck on the vmax a funnel makes refueling it off a bottle easier.


Assume you'll be driving conservatively when in these remote areas and I think figuring 120 miles between fillups is a reasonable amount, while maintaing a decent safety margin.

When I ran mine dry I had 152 miles on it, though that was normal riding with several minutes in vboost range. Probably could have squeezed 160 if I had driven more carefully.

Ron Ayers has me880's on sale right now. Not sure how good of a sale it is though, i didnt check. Just noticed the blurb on their homepage the other day....
 
Welcome to the best Vmax forum on the planet.
My mileage, like mentioned, is dependant on my right wrist. I've gone 145 miles on a tank but was running on fumes when I got to the pump. I average 110 miles before the light comes on, then figure I can go another 30-35 miles max. on the .8 of a gallon left.
