Just reading about this....looks pretty bad. Not as strong as the last one but due to the positioning of the epicenter the results will be much worse.

I was just reading about it too. This time there was some deaths.
After shocks can also do even more damage.Living in SoCal, Ive got lot's of earth quake stories from when I was a kid till now.

Bad earthquake for sure, positioning of it couldn't have been much worse nor the timing. Seems at least one of our regular forum members(Matt) was far enough away from it and is safe. Prayers out to all involved in this earthquake.

Seems to be that areas turn for disasters , Australia's gotten their share of problems also . Good luck to all involved .

Australia and New Zealand are having a hard time of it at the moment.Earthquakes in NZ ,65 DEAD 300 missing,cyclones and flooding in Queensland,flooding in New South Wales and huge fires in Western Australia.Aussies and Kiwis are tough and and we will bounce back but it is a hell of a struggle sometimes. The world is offering support and aid and giving more help which is great .It is a shame though that natural disasters happen that causes the human spirit to show it's true heart and courage in what are sometimes overwhelming times of death and devastation.Kevman.

Yes it definately isnt good .
Christchurch CBD has be cordened off and is a no go zone (about 40 blocks) there are 113 confimed dead with 238 still missing and it is now retreival and not looking for survivers . The cost of this is estimated to be inexcess of 10 billion NZD. The city centre is expected to be closed of up to 7 months . 1 third of all biuldings remaining are to be destroyed as well as half of all brick buildings .
The NZD has dropped against all currencies and the Rugby World Cup games to be held later this yr is not likely to be played there now due to lack of accomodation .
The Grand Chancellor Hotel a 24 story building is moving so that is hampering the body retreival even more and when that biulding goes it will take others with it .
New Zealand has been unendated with international help with teams arriving from overseas daily .
But Christchurchs iconic building in the cities centre will be rebuilt brick by brick .
In the suburbs there are 1000s of homes that are unliveable but there is a very big international police presence there to protect due to looters .
The NZ Government has said the city will be rebuilt bigger and better than ever . So eventually it will be onwards and upwards ..

That pic says a lot.
That's a sad deal. We've been having some mild quakes in the mid states area. The big ones on the Mississippi River and off the west coast are suppose to come at any time.
I heard there was a statue in ChristChurch that, when it fell over and broke, it had a 'time capsule' letter in it. Heard anything about that?

Yeah it did apparently had been there since 1908 ? i think its at the muesum and will be interesting to see what it holds , they will replace the statue and the capsule as well as with another 1 .
