For future reference when I ordered from boats.net and requested and paid for 5- #93604-12037-00 I only received 1.
I ground down the 4 original pins and installed them. Save $9.75 shipping (seriously?) and $8.00 for the pins. Never even used the clutch cover gasket.

Why did those parts fail?

Because there is side loading that eventually gets too great and pulls on the stamped retainer allowing the pins to come loose. The newer design (99 and up) will never have this same issue since it's a billet segment and not a 2 part segment.
