I finally got around to swapping my main jets to the 150's I got from Mark. It had 160's in it and I took a look at the needles and they are stage 1's.

AM I better off buying new stock needles or can I adjust the stage 1's to work ok? I have an 86 with trapps.

Also what other parts should I check to return the carbs to stock?

Is there any way to tell if the slides have been drilled? Mine look pretty rough, the hole isn't nice and round.

Thanks

Most likely the slides have been drilled. Are you using the shorter slide springs? Try to get the stage 1 needles to work before going back to stock needles.

Do you know the length of stock vice stage 1?

Right now the needles are on the 3rd clip. I'm about to take a quick ride and see how it feels.

Stage 1/7 springs are 4 1/2 inches. Stock are closer to 6-6 1/2 inches in length.

They're stock.

Butt dyno says it's pulling harder on the upper end. I still have that annoying burp when holding steady at 4100 then hitting wot. So too much needle?

Also what are the benefits of staying with the stage 1 needles , besides money?

Tom

Are your needles 3rd clip from blunt end? I do the WOT throttle test at 4K. If any hesitation at all your needles are too rich. Do you have any shims? I would try to go in 1/2 clip increments if possible. 1/2 clip is approximately .013 inches.

Advantage of stage 1 needles is they're adjustable. Stock you're stuck with unless you need to shim due to leanness.

3rd from the blunt end. So I need to lower the clip 1/2 to 3.5. Yes there is a washer/shim.

The confusion most folks have is the expression "dropping the needles" and what exactly folks mean when they say that. Some gents believe that means moving the clip towards the "pointy" end of the needle, which as we know is the opposite of what you are saying. Just wanted to clarify the statement.

Put the clip on the 2nd slot with the shim between the clip and the slide=2.5. clear as mud ;)

:bang head::bang head::bang head::bang head::bang head:

Does anybody have a spare stage 1 needle?

PO seemed unclear on the concept of like parts 3 out of 4 carbs have stage 1 the 4th has stock. :ummm:

Try Sean Morley. If he doesn't have them he could get 'em.

I have the needle coming from Dyno jet.

Some odd behavior on the way to work today, I'm gonna check all the rubbers and stuff and if it still is there tonight I'll post it.

Would it be a good idea to fill the holes in with something fuel proof if he uses stock needles?Chad
