Anybody tried the bigger battery box from exactrep?

I think my battery's dead/dying and a bigger, 20A lead acid battery with the bigger box is still cheaper than a gel one (not bothered about weight).

I'd rather a clean solution than modding the stock box.

Cut-away w/abandon, they're cheap on the aftermarket!

I have a Ballistic in one bike and a Shorai in another, both Li-ion, both saving many pounds over stock, and both requiring no battery box surgery. Plenty-powerful, too.

I don't think you'll find a better battery that fits a stock Vmax battery box any cheaper (currently $35.75).
It's maintenance free (SLA/AGM) and mine is still going strong after 6 years of use.

I bought a UB12180 SLA Battery for about $42:

It has 13 more CCA than the Shorai (UB12180 - 283 vs Shorai - 270 vs Stock -200) but it does weigh about 9 lbs more.
The UB12180 has been in my Vmax for almost 6 years now and still hold's it's charge like a champ.
I put the trickle charger on it every few weeks over the winter but it always shows as fully charged.

According to http://www.yuasabatteries.com/pdfs/2010_yuasa_apps_specs.pdf, the yb16al-A2 type battery is 207x71.5x164mm, so the UB12220 appears to be wider and taller by a few mm, but shorter. Is there enough play for this to fit?

(I know I should just pull the old battery and measure the battery box, but lacking time as my wife's sister is in a coma and we are looking after her 3-year-old so hope you can forgive the apparent laziness)

That looks like a Re-branded (to Power4) UB12220, so it should work fine.
The UB12220 and UB12180 are the same size and Both will fit fine in the Stock battery box.
I have the UB12180 in mine now and a few guys have already installed he UB12220.

Why not get the batterybox from a 1990 Gold Wing and modify it??

I just installed the UB12180 and it was a very tight squeeze and wouldn't go all the way down to the bottom of the box. Definitely a wider battery than stock. Maybe over time it will work it's way down, who knows.

Also, be aware that the terminals are vertical which does require a little improvisation to get the ground wire to connect.

Mine slid right in, it was a little tighter than the Stock YUASA but not much.
I didn't have any issue connecting the wires that I remember.
I even have a Battery tender plug added on to the posts.

Here are the Dimensions for both:
YUASA YB16AL-A2 Dimensions: 8.125" x 2.8125" x 6.4375"
UB12180 Dimensions: 7.13 x 3.01 x 6.57

Simple job to cut the battery box and stick a GW battery in there. Because of the number of bikes the Wing battery fits, they are sometimes cheaper to buy than the Max battery..

GW battery has to have at least 10 -20% more CCA than a stock Max battery..

It slid in, but stopped about a half inch short of the bottom. Couldn't force it any further. It's just a little wider than stock. Either that or my battery box shrunk. :confused2:

That's weird because mine slid in fine too and went all the way to the bottom of the Stock box.
Are you 100% sure there isn't something under the battery in the box stopping it from going all the way down.

It sits about a quarter inch of the bottom due to the larger width of the battery and the curvature of the bottom of the battery box. It will not go down further.

Admittedly I haven't look at mine closely in a while and it's been in the Bike for over 6 years so you may be right, but as far as I remember it went all the way down.
If I could actually walk I'd check mine out, when I can walk again and start rebuilding my bike, I definitely will check and post back here.

You may be right and you may just have a slightly bigger Battery than us.
