First off, I'm new here, so thanks for creating this forum
Secondly, I'm far from new to bikes, but very new to VMax's... anyway, I found a bike, its a 1999 VMAX with 23k miles, and aesthetically its in very good condition.
PREEMPTIVE APOLOGY IF this has been covered, I did search though
The bike is 200 miles away from where I live, so I had a friend of mine go check it out. The previous owner said theres a bit of corrosion on the battery, and its old so it needs to be replaced. So before my friend got there today, he Replaced battery in the bike with hope that she'd fire right up. (Its my impression that the bike is still ridden often)
With the new battery installed, the bike is dead, no lights, no nothing.
When a jumper cable is run from the negative terminal of a car battery to the negative terminal of the bike, all the lights go and it sounds like it's going to fire right up. (however, it didnt start, it just turned over to no avail)
The previous owner insists the battery just needs to be charged since new batteries dont come charged (thats never been my experience) Anyway, hes getting it charged up and he'll try again. My guess is theres a bad negative lead to the battery and it just needs a ground. but that doesnt explain why it wont start which could be a whole new issue.
So, based on these problems, has anybody experienced this before? Ideas of places to start?
It stinks that without starting I cant even test the second gear, cooling, charging problems that are apparently common with these bikes.....
Thanks in advance
WB
