First off, I'm new here, so thanks for creating this forum

Secondly, I'm far from new to bikes, but very new to VMax's... anyway, I found a bike, its a 1999 VMAX with 23k miles, and aesthetically its in very good condition.

PREEMPTIVE APOLOGY IF this has been covered, I did search though ;)

The bike is 200 miles away from where I live, so I had a friend of mine go check it out. The previous owner said theres a bit of corrosion on the battery, and its old so it needs to be replaced. So before my friend got there today, he Replaced battery in the bike with hope that she'd fire right up. (Its my impression that the bike is still ridden often)

With the new battery installed, the bike is dead, no lights, no nothing.

When a jumper cable is run from the negative terminal of a car battery to the negative terminal of the bike, all the lights go and it sounds like it's going to fire right up. (however, it didnt start, it just turned over to no avail)

The previous owner insists the battery just needs to be charged since new batteries dont come charged (thats never been my experience) Anyway, hes getting it charged up and he'll try again. My guess is theres a bad negative lead to the battery and it just needs a ground. but that doesnt explain why it wont start which could be a whole new issue.

So, based on these problems, has anybody experienced this before? Ideas of places to start?

It stinks that without starting I cant even test the second gear, cooling, charging problems that are apparently common with these bikes.....

Thanks in advance

WB

hum, bad love story begening (but it could be a verry good bike)

Maybe You need help from a Vmax owner (i think) i meen beside you

switch on=

do you hear the full pump (doe`s it have normal charging up sound)

do you hear the Vboost reeinitialisation

doe`s the choke level work`s

doe`s it have fire on spark plug.

And when it`s stoped for long time; the Max need to be crank, realy crank.

Good luck boody

It sounds like when he removed the battery to replace it and the connecting wire (negative) became disconnected from wherever it grounds out? is that possible?

If he placed a wet battery in the bike then the battery will need to be charged up, before used. I replaced mine with a dry type it had a charge but still needed to be fully charged. If there is a bad ground you probably will not get the bike to start, you will get all the light and actions but not to start. This does not mean you have found a bad bike just one that needs looked after some. When I got mine I have to go through it too. and it only sat for a few months less than 6 , so they do not like to be used a as over sized paper weights.

Problem solved, he just didnt hook the ground up! simple fix.

I now own a vmax :) Stay tuned for a "what the heck do I have here thread" lol

One thing you'll notice about this site (as has been discussed recently) is that everyone is really helpful and is not looking to make you feel stupid. This is not the case on many other sites. There is so much info on here, you'll get dizzy just looking around. I'm glad your problem was a simple one. I hope my new one gets fixed as quickly. Welcome to funland.

Come to think of it, now that we're fast approaching the Mod Season, I would have expected that miserable prick to have showed his furry mug by now....do you suppose the little bastid has gone elsewhere.....spend someone else's hard earned dollar? :ummm:

Maybe over to the Harley guys, they like to spend money on mods. :confused2:

Have you ever noticed that Mod Monkey and Morleys Muscle have the same initials? Maybe it's destiny lol!
