fm, back in spring when i was at bikeweek, i spied a guy sporting some those venture covers you talk of. i thought they looked sweet, and figured i'd do the same when it came time to reshim, so i got me a set off of eBay and polished them (well one anyways) up. i just dry-fitted them and am not loving it.

as far as refinishing and detailing your bike-i'd be happy to join forces with pm, but i dont think you be getting bike back....especially with pm's pc'd and chromed parts hahaha

New beginnings for my 05 vmax. Oil changed with rotella t 15/40 as recommended here in the forum.
Also back rest n carrier removed. Am in two minds about the windscreen since its almost winter it may stay till after.
Im going to use the fz6 for my touring till #3 comes . VMax stays for fun rides . Any syggestions on improvements I could do to make it more hot rod-ish ?

if it's the hot-rod look you want, ya gotta lose the big screen, maybe replace it with the oem flyscreen.
Check out KJ Shover's and MaxMidnight's albums for ideas. Those British bodywork pieces and scoops are sweet! (can't think of the brandname)
Many examples of rodded out bikes on this forum, these are only two.

the early model OEM manuals (i believe it is) is WRONG with the shim math. just double check your work, or use a haynes manual i think has it right.

finally got the valve covers on. the most bitchiest part was keeping the gasket in place even with some dabs of gasket seal in some strategic spots. man what a PITA, but they're back on. phew.

ended up adjusting #1's E and I, #2's E, #3's E and I, and #4's E. took my I'd say 3-4 hours. all had tightened up during the 50k miles of banging.

garret, if your directing the advice my way, thanks. i did read a post once upon a time ago about the incorrect shim math and revisited it. i tripled checked my work and measured and remeasured.

many thanks to captain kyle for the shim kit. !!!!! and many thanks to naughtyG again for the how-to. this forum is hands down indispensible.

now the fun part, putting everything back, followed with synching up the carbs

but I'm gonna take advantage of the carb being off and give them a good cleaning as well finally complete my hunt for the Tune that I started late last Spring and see if some 150s will squeeze out that last bit of oomph I think still remains untapped.

gotcha yea i didn't see this whole other page of replies when i wrote mine it was right under yours, haha. glad you double checked!

A guy on an XJ forum drew this shim table up....just enter in your measured clearances and the existing shim and it does all the calcs. for you.

Even tells you if any of your existing shims can be used to bring some of your other valves into spec.

I don't posess the necessary cerebral horsepower to do something like this but maybe a math guru would want to tackle it??? :confused2:

download the Maxim-X Valve Shim Table spreadsheet here

I called PCW and ordered a clutch kit, since when I was goosing my DJet Stage 7-equipped-carbs bike this past weekend (last week's Mod Monkey result), I was feeling the clutch slip a bit in the upper gears as the VBoost was coming-in. Mike was who spoke w/me, very patient, explained proper overhaul of the 'steelies,' and accommodated my request for expedited shipping so I can be-sure to have them in-time to install for next weekend's riding.

Yes, the good weather riding season is here in FL, where we use the cigarette & cigar-smoking French-Canadians and Ontario residents on their Gold Wings and Harleys as slalom markers, and delight in destroying their egoes as they run their open-piped H-D's all-the-way-to 5500 rpm's trying to keep-up w/a mild roll-on from a VMax.:rofl_200::rofl_200::biglaugh::punk:

Their motto seems to be, "if you can't make power, make lots of noise!" :biglaugh:

I cannot understand why Yamaha didn't go to radials for the VMax in oh, 1990! By then they already were in-use on their big sportbikes for 4 years, and given the change in handling & all-around use, you would think they would embrace the technology. It handles curves better, it tracks at higher speeds better, just a superior feel everywhere.

Is it the rear tire breaking loose? Probably not w/my avoirdupois! I am going to let my bike sit until I get the clutch in hopefully later this week. I have had my favorite mechanic, Steve, at Under Pressure in Dania Beach, FL do most of my recent work, but I am gonna do my clutch myself. I went w/a PCW kit because of all the positive comments I saw here about them. Once-again, the brothers help shape the choices of our affliction!

And, I just got a great email from "mr. NST" about the merits of Cycleistic for his luggage rack and a Maxgasser seat. Add to that, "KJShover" agreed to spend some time helping me w/a design. The good advice and the experience of others is why I choose to read and to post here.

Clutch slip? Tire-spin? Hey, it's a VMax, it's all-good! If it isn't right, it can be fixed reasonably, try that w/your Diavel! And if you don't know how to do it, someone here will!

probably because it costs money to re-engineer it and a lot of cruisers still didn't have radials.

Put the Closed Caps with 8 Discs back on my SuperTrapps and went for a short ride on this balmy 40F day here in NY.
I had a couple in a Pickup honk at me and then follow me for a few miles.
They eventually Pulled up next to me at a light and asked me to pull over so they could look at my Max.
We stopped in a parking lot to chat and they both gave me a bunch of compliments on my Bike.
The guy said he has wanted a VMax since 1985 when he first saw a commercial for it and the woman said she keeps telling him to just go ahead and buy one.
Now that's my kind of woman.

Rode it for the first time... Found I need: 2nd gear, spark in cylinder 1 (or whichever one is back left), suspension work.

And I'm not even disappointed. This project has taken me a year and I won't be giving up.

I think the order is: LF #1, RF #2, RR #3, LR #4 Correction: LR: #1; LF: #2; RF: #3; RR: #4 after a gentle prod from 'mabdcmb' & consulting my manual!

SInce you are opening it up, 'undercut tranny,' shift drum, poss. shift forks, oil pick-up o-ring fix, maybe different 5th gear if you ride long distances.

Do the obvious stuff for the spark, check the cap, trim the primary lead a bit & re-install the cap, switch caps side-to-side to see if the problem moves too, same thing w/coils, new plug, check connections for corrosion & continuity, etc.

I am waiting on a clutch kit before I ride my bike again, can't wait! Other than that, runs-good, steers good. Consider radials if you don't already have them. I say that's the best handling change you can make. :punk:
