When does fan come on?

I put the lower-temp switch on years & years ago and never looked back. After a fast run down the hwy, the fan is never on. It won't kick back on until I've made it nearly all the way in my drive (800' running dead slow due to gravel). I can still achieve nearly 40mpg running up around 80mph. My 85 gets better mileage running near 80 as it does maintaining 60mph. Although I can say that I used to get better mpg with 100% dino gas than I currently do using this 10% ethanol crud.

The best thing I like about the cooler auto-switch is that I never have to worry about my bike running up in the hotter part of the guage. I KNOW it's going to kick the fan on, and I don't have to remember to do it. Too easy, and that's the way I like it cause I'm lazy that way.

I commute to work on my max and frequently get caught in stop-and-go so I ended up replacing the stock thermo-switch, I find it works great. It hasn't once come on when I'm actually moving... at any speed... but when I'm stopped it keeps the engine running cooler. My gauge shows the fan coming on at 195 degrees.

Mileage... I consistently go to 105 miles before I need to switch to reserve.

I need to figure out my fuel mileage deal. I drive 100miles round trip to work and can't do it on one tank! Lihht comes on 85-90 miles.. maybe its my wrist. :D

Just thinking outloud, I would think the low fuel light is going to come on sooner during the summer months due to the fuel in the tank will be warmer in the summer than in the winter. Since the low fuel sensor works off fuel keeping it cool, if the fuel tank temp goes up it should make the thermosistor hotter thus turning on the low fuel light sooner. If this is true it could mean you have actually 2 or 3 tenths gallon more fuel in your tank which would probably put you on the usual 100 mile mark before light comes on. I may be way out in left field on this theory, but it seems logical to me.

I'm an idiot totally forgot chaindrive you have to cut away some of the tank for a chain. So my tank is less than stock. But still when I calculate at the pump I'm only getting 32mpg

I gotta agree I've never seen 41-43mpg on a max. I've now had two '86 and a 2000, first '86 never got more than 105 miles to reserve, the 2000 has a larger (21L instead of 15) tank and still only does just 200 kms (125 miles) and the other '86 only gets about 120 kms (85 miles) to reserve, and I'm not even riding hard!

And I know what you mean about the stator - it *shouldn't* make a difference but it did!? Maybe I was less aerodynamic with the fan running all the time LOL

Just checked it last weekend and I got 42mpg but wasn't beating on it much... I can ride like a complete idiot and still get 38 though.. Morley jet kit with stage 7 needles and springs with drilled slides stock main jets a Kerker with comp baffle and COPs with a dyna on curve 1.... Two weeks ago I had 127 miles and the light still wasn't on and barely fit 3 gallons in it.. I've gotten 44mpg before but that was 55-60mph riding with a bunch of Harleys..

Seems to come on when I'm wearing shorts and at a stoplight. Burning the crap out of my shins LOL.

But seriously, just before I get to the red on my temp gauge
