Hey gurus

Went to start the vmax (93)
Sounds like the starter has shat itself?
It has Perspex clutch cover it turns soon as I hit the start button for about 1 stroke then stops and sounds like the starter doesn't engage?

Try jump-starting the bike, using a known good battery, or a car (car not running)
As soon as you can afford it, invest in a good meter. It will pay for itself in no time.
Cheers!

Gonna grab one tomorrow, yeah will try and jump it...will leave it on the trickle charger tonight and see how I go

Thanks mate

Just not sure if it is the battery :(
Cranks slow but then doesn't sound like its turning but struggling

I think that you will find out that your battery is kaput.
Most automotive supply shops will load-test your battery for free.
Also, avoid trying to start the bike on a poorly charged battery - many owners believe that this contributes to early starter clutch failure - a very common occurrence with these bikes, and a fairly difficult job to fix.
When you get a meter, a fully charged battery should read at least 12.6 volts across the terminals (wait at least an hour after charging, before measuring), but this is still not a guarantee that the battery is good. This is where the load-testing comes in. As an alternative to taking the battery out of the bike to have it tested, you can also measure the battery while attempting to start the bike - a helper is handy here - the voltage should not drop below 10 volts or so while the bike is cranking.
Good luck!

Still no joy!

12.8v at the battery, when cranking its 11.7v
At the starter motor it's 5v when cranking... Think the starter motor is gone?

I would check it at the starter solenoid and see what its at. If its good, then your starter is probably got a dead short.

Battery is 12.9v

At crank 11.7v

Starter motor on crank is 5v

Starter solenoid 12.9v

At crank 1v

Not sure if its the starter or the solenoid??
The starter isn't turning the engine but sounds like its screaming when I crank it

Are bike starters the same as a car? As in do they throw out?

No. A "starter clutch" affair is used.
Have you tried jumping directly from the positive battery post to the positve cable lug on the starter motor? (the motor is grounded by the attachment bolts) If the starter motor turns the engine over, the problem is then due to the starting circuit components or wiring.
If the motor fails to turn the engine over, the problem is in the motor itself, or the starter clutch assembly, or perhaps the engine itself is seized - hope it's not that!
Cheers!

From the videos I've seen compared to mine, it doesn't sound like the starter clutch?

edit - your video hadn't been posted before I wrote the above.
I don't have any experience with starter motor failures, but my guess would be that something has sheared off, or the gear train is not engaging.
I'm sure others will chime in soon, including the Guru of the Max, Sean Morley.
Cheers!

Would love to hear from anyone who's heard this
All gears are there, stuck my finger the the starter hole and the gear the starter contacts feels fine, there is alittle play in it though

And that's you heaps for being here the whole way through haha

You need to jump it with a car battery and make another video while doing so. If it sounds the same, I would say the starter clutch is not engaging.
