Yes, espacially in todays lubricants.
Rubber also is not a good choice as it goes with high temp apps cuz it becomes very soft.

aren't the other ones in the oil galley system rubber?

did some research tonight (and dragged danny down with me, sorry about that, haha) and found the following chart. Can anyone comment on its accuracy or lack thereof?

http://www.sisweb.com/vacuum/o-rings/oring.htm

I measured the rubber o-ring that seem to fit perfect for me and put it into this website and looks like i can get a box of 50 silicone or 25 viton for like $10. I would def be willing to sell these for the cost of postage or so to whoever would want one if there is any interest.

here's what I got:

based on the charts and prices viton may be the way to go?

Never a problem Garrett!

Seems like Viton would work perfectly, second only to PTFE and that's cause of it's low resistance to steam.....certainly not a problem with a motorcycle.

Good find!

Good quick info, good find.

10$ for 15 vitons is a bargain deal i would say my friend.

another question, in my attempt to pull the flywheel off my bike I had a socket on there at one point to try to get a better fit and it dug in slightly into the end of the crankshaft, i shouldn't have to worry about that right?. i can try to grab some pics, but don't have one right now. i can't really feel the dig on the end of the shaft its just slightly coloured different

will do.

also just for your english, 'make' is the wrong word here, you want 'take'

making pictures sounds lke i'm in a lab somewhere developing film with the acid and chemicals!

altho thinking of the definition difference between make and take, i can easily see how 'make' could be used.

Gotcha, thanks - I will remember that.

BTW, in PL translation "MAKE" would be ok in this case LOL :rofl_200:

it makes sense in the definition in english too! just one of those things you learn as you learn the language.

do you 'speak' english very often or only read/write it?

ok so here are pics of the end of my crankshaft.

the usual motorcycle machine shop is not answering my calls. found an automotive machine shop. he doesn't have the tools necessary to balance a shaft opening that small (and tapered) but said he doubts its out of balance. so two questions to ya'll..

1. my crankshaft is fine right? not sure what i would do anyways if it wasn't! haha i can't imagine those little gouges are gonna hurt anything

2. as long as my flywheel is true, and the auto machinist can drill out the 3 holes to 10mm, does it need to be balanced? Can i just run a dial indicator on it to make sure, on both outside edges, once its back on the crankshaft? Or i was thinking i could probably use the local bike shops static tire balancer eh?

next few questions:

1. on the clutch, on the fiber plates does it matter which way faces in or out as long as the double indents line up with the double circles? obviously the steel all have to face the same way.

2. do y'all use vaseline on the engine side of gaskets? What about the stator cover gromets, should i use a little gasket maker (permatex ultra black) by pulling the gromets thru the cover a bit more then pushing them back?
