Maybe this is just my lack of knowledge, but why hasn't someone created a way to put a 6th gear on a max? I do a lot of highway riding and would really like to drop the RPM's some times..

I know that their is the venture rear end swap, but I'd like to keep my current gearing and just add another...

Whats wrong with the gearing? The VMAX is geared to run 160 MPH topped out.
The transmission wouldnt hold up to a 6 spd. The torque would rip the gears up. plus the engine is already heavy enough..

The VMAX is a cruiser bike, can you tell me other cruisers that have a 6 speed?

Whats the next question, why doesnt it have arm rests on the seats?
Why doesnt the VMAX get 65 MPG?
Why doesnt the VMAX have cruise control?
Why doesnt the VMAX have a 10 gallon gas tank?
Why doesnt the VMAX reverse its heavy to move backwards?
Why doesnt the VMAX have a cup holder?
Why doesnt the VMAX have an automatic transmission?

Is there anything I missed?

Ignoring Lankees little tirade there...:biglaugh: .. adding a 6th gear, assuming there was room in the engine case would be really expensive. Sean (one2dmax) offers a 5th gear from a Venture (I think ) and the Venture rear end combo that really drops the RPM. However you need a high HP motor for it otherwise it turns the VMax into a slug.

I wouldn't worry about the cruising rpm too much, the Max will purr right along at 4-4.5k all day long without complaint. The only options that I'm aware of are a venture rear, 5th gear ratio change and a taller wheel/tire combo. The guys with the big cc engines have found it beneficial to use the venture rear end without hurting overall performance much due to the added torque they have (it allows them to utilize 1st gear a little better). It's probably best to stay with stock gearing, unless of course all your concerned about is highway mileage then you could do all 3 and drop your rpm by 1-1.5k.

I totally agree that it needs a 6th gear! After hitting 5th, I'm always trying to upshift just one more. My old Honda Magna's are 6 speed and even most HD's are 6 speed these days. It sure would have been nice if the Vmax would have been a 6 speed from the beginning.

YANKEE YANKEE , EASY , MAN YOU MUST HAVE SOME PITBULL IN YOU FROM SOMEWHERE !:rofl_200:

If you have the cash get a hold of Sean Morley and get a tranny from him with the Royal Star 5th gear overdrive. It is awesome on the highway and you still have the normal gearing 1st-4th to get and get moving just the way the Max was intended to be used.:eusa_dance:
I had it installed in my bike because I commute with it and on the highway it is AWESOME!!!! :biglaugh::biglaugh::biglaugh:
Cheers

UUmm ... Then buy a Magna or a HD then.

I gotta side with Yankee! The VMax is what it is. And with it's stock gearing, my runs just fine. Both highway and city riding. Spending a bunch of money just to drop the rpms 1k is a waste of money in my opinion.
JUST RIDE THE HELL OUT OF THE DAMN THING!

I already have a Magna and will never buy an HD. It was just an opinion, Cowboy.

I want a 12 speed like Tractor trailer guys have. I really wish they would have put a high and low range on the VMAX. Than I could drop my RPMS to around 1800 RPMS when cruising at 65 MPH and my top speed would be somewhere around 350 MPH

:hmmm: wow....

Sometimes I've posted questions that I thought might get people riled up.... But I was actually more just curious about the mechanics behind why it is or isn't possible....

Thanks for the entertaining and informational posts! :biglaugh:

Well that makes it worth it then right? :rofl_200::rofl_200::rofl_200:

Seriously tho - I have a long commute, I think my max still hauls arse with the venture diff, but I would REALLY love to drop my highway RPMs to get closer to 40mpg @ 95mph - as it is the 30mpg I get makes it hardly better than a cage at $4 a gal... :bang head:

350 MPH'S , NOW THATS WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT !:punk:

Why dont they make the VMAX a Hybrid. Damn It I want to get 120 MPG on my Muscle Cruiser Bike. I am sick of this poor fuel econmy.

I wonder if the guys over on the Goldwing bitch about there stop light to stop light performance.:ummm:

I guess you just don't get do you? To you the max is a street legal dragster. Fine by me.

To me my max's a great bike I'm really happy to ride 'cos it'll smoke most other bikes, and I also happen to ride it 180 miles return trip daily so I'd appreciate better mpg.

That does not make me want a pissy armchair Goldwing or ugly Beemer touring bike. I'm real happy with my bike, but I still wish it was more stable and gave me better mpg.

To each his own..

until you have tried one of my overdrives I don't think you can even remotely apprecaite how nice it is. I still don't normally recommend it for just that change if you have a good engine as it's a lot of work.

Well Said :clapping:

Makes sense if you use your bike that many miles a day. As we already discussed Sean sells the Venture Rear end which lowers the gear ratio. There are also options of transmission work. I dont think you want that kind of downtime with the hefty cost of transmission modifications.
Do you honestly think your MPG is going to drop that much by lowering your RPM'S by 1500 on the interstate?
As long as your not at 6500 and the V-BOOST is closed I really dont think you are going to see anymore than 1-2MPG increase. Hmm how long will that fuel savings take to pay for this modification?
