I dont need the shim kit. I am ashamed to admit what was wrong but I just might get a homer award out of it so here it goes.

The spark plug gap was non existant. Dont know how long it has been that way but regardless it is amazing what happens when a spark is actually there to do its job. :worthy: I was not looking forward to the valves at all.

Coffee good luck on your adventure. We are here for you.
Cheers

Hi Coffee,

Looks like I'm about 140 miles away. Give me a shout if you need anything.

I just did the clearances on mine last month. Like Lankee says, take your time.

Tom

Thanks ya'll I really needed some encouragement. I cannot adjust that valve and I gave up. But it's so tight I can't just run it that way. But the bucket just won't rotate, it's hanging up and the notches are under the camshaft and nothing I can do will move it. I tried to get the camshaft off but some asshat didn't put antisieze on the exhaust heat shield, so I can't get that bolt out without stripping it. I haven't stripped it yet, but the wrench is just starting to turn in it and I know what comes next if I try to turn it. SO I can't get the cam chain tensioner off no matter what I do. And I can't rotate the bucket so I can't remove the shim so I can't adjust this valve. I need to know why the bucket won't move.

The bike is stuck in gear. I can barely push it, yet I have to get it into the truck in the morning. I'm trading Ebay work for engine work. I already parted out a Honda ATV motor and listed it at the local shop, in return the mechanic will help me with this. I hope. He has Snap-ons and lots more tools than my poor bulky Craftsman set.

I have no idea how just me and the fellow are going to load that monster tomorrow.

I'm far from loving that Yamaha right now.

Why cant you get it out of gear?:confused2:

Is your transmission FUBAR? :ummm:

Is your gear shifter off its shaft?:ummm:

You dont need a clutch to get the bike in nuetral,, just rock it back and forth as you wiggle she shifter.:clapping:

Sometimes the bucket wont spin it gets a lock effect with the oil which creates like a suction.. All the bolts are torque and make a )))SNAP((( noise when they are broken loose.... Its to late now but when loosen the hardware such as cams brackets, chain tensioner etc.. Get the box end of a wrench or use a 6PT 10MM and the first intial move should be a quick snap, Dont try and ease into it or it will................well you know :bang head:
IN all honesty,,,, if one hasnt messed with a VMAX engine I wouldnt let him touch it! The VMAX engine is a rare bird and not an engine to practice your mechanical skills on it will hurt you and your feelings.

Thanks Lankee, this guy's a good mechanic--he had an '86 and I rode it a couple years ago. It was in really good condition. He didn't do much except tell me what to do, best way to learn.

It wasn't very hard to muscle the bike up into the truck after all, my fellow's a pretty big dude and I'm no weakling either. He gets, well, he gets a reward for his help. :whistlin:

Mechanic agrees the carrier is stuck, he said just put a little oil on it and rotate the engine a few times, if I put in the right shim before it stuck then it should come right. So I did. And it did. Back in the truck, I gotta go list the rest of the ATV clutch stuff.

Frustration ain't the word for it. I can't be posting the words I have for this whole thing right now. At least it's a step in the right direction.

Who's next for the shims? I'm ready to send, until then they are safe and secure in my house until Sean tells me where they go next.

Give it till the end of the week and if no one steps up you can ship back to me on Monday.
Sean

Hey, my bearings are in the mail right now. Hopefully they'll be here by Saturday and I'll be starting the assembly on my rebuilt motor. I'll be needing to do the valve adjust thing in a couple of weeks. If nobody else is stepping up, I would love to have that box of widgets for a couple of weeks.
Thanks.
Paul

It's there and available. Try to work out who wants it first and get it moving around the planet - lol.

Sean

Man I tell you, this Sean guy is a mighty nice fellow allowing his shim kit to be on tour with all the VMAX brothers and sisters..

Hey Sean when ya going to start passing out the burrito basket for everyone to use?

UPS keeps crushing the burrito's. It's cold enough today that they would be frozen though. Firewrench and VmaxinD - we need to see who is ready first so Jenn can ship the kit.

Sean

OK who gets the shims?

If nobody speaks up I'm sending them back to Sean next week! Remember you need to be ready to use them when you get them, and they're pricey so you need to keep them safe.

I got my gaskets today and just spent the evening cleaning the old gasket off. I can install the stator cover as soon as I file down the JB weld from the chip I made when the wrench slipped. Then put the shifter on and put back in the oil I lost and see if it blows up. Tomorrow I may be back to riding it. We'll see if I can rekindle the passion. I am truly pissed that a valve adjust turned into this mess and I can't help but just not like the bike right now at all. I sure hope a nice ride on a fast bike will fix all that....

I'm starting the bottom end tomorrow. I can wait a couple of weeks for the box.
Thanks for the opportunity to use the box.
Paul

unless someone else steps up go ahead and ship the kit on out to Paul "firewrench".

OK, can do.

Now what? Won't start. I buttoned it all up, new gaskets, torqued to spec, the starter gears did come off with the stator cover but the manual is very clear how to put them back in so I think I did that right. Battery was a little low so I charged it, but it's not starting. All the connections are good, I never unhooked the battery or the starter relay.

The fuel pump spins up, lights are strong, but hit the button and it's just a loud click. I don't know the terms for it, but the click I hear is mechanical, it sounds like the starter throwing out the gear like it's supposed to. But it's not turning the engine.

Also, the oil light is not coming on when the ignition key is on. Shouldn't the oil light come on when I turn the key?

It's in neutral. Kill switch is on. There's gas in it. Engine just won't turn over.

Help?

Update, went to show it to the hubby and he tried to start it. There was a scary "snap!" and the motor turned. I think the gears meshed because there weren't any more noises.

Starter is turning fine now so it's either fuel or spark. But the battery is low again, will do the spark test next.

Hey Coffee, you can use a car battery to jump that with. Check your fluid level in your battery too. Sounds like it's goin dead pretty quick.
Keep a smile on, you'll be riding soon.:eusa_dance:

No spark at any of the plugs. Checked the plug wires at both ends, checked and re-checked everything electrical I touched during the valve job. Bridged the terminals on the relay; it works. Why no spark?

The one thing out of the ordinary is that I had to remove the stator cover when I chipped it. I hung it from the frame with a bungee to keep it from pulling on the wires, but *if it did* pull on the wires, would that interrupt spark?

Any ideas?

Your pickup coils for the ignition are in the stator cover too. It's quite possible that the leads pulled out. Check all your wires coming off the motor on that side as well as the connection at the CDI and the coils. Bound to be one of them.

Yeah, it was both wires coming off the pickups were crimped and torn. I soldered them. It's running now.
Maybe I'm paranoid but it's just as likely I did something wrong, but it sounds like ass to me, definately doesn't sound any better than it did before. I wish somebody who knows the bike better could listen to it.

It's pouring rain but you know I'm going to go get a quart of oil to replace what I lost, and I'm going riding, with hell AND high water. I've caught enough hell, bring on the high water!

The way the past 2.5 weeks with this machine have gone, I better raise my insurance level before I throw a leg over....:damn angry:
