If you are looking for a 1911 variant, also look at Para Ordinance.
Their S14-45 comes with the nearly the same feature set as a Kimber with the same fit and finish and also give you a double stack mag with 14+1 capacity
Literally more bang for your buck.
I had my IPSC Limited class gun built on their P-14 45 frame (same frame as the S14) and I have put well in excess of 10,000 rounds through that gun and it still feels tight and will drive tacks as long as I do my part.

For your shotgun question, it's no question at all. The Win 1300 defender absolutely tears up the Mossberg (I own both), in both reliability and speed of action. As a bonus the Winchester will feed those little Aquila mini shells, and you can put about twelve of those buggers in there.
Thow on a Knoxx recoil absorbing stock, and a Surefire forend, and you've got a world class combat shotty.
