Re: shinko tires

+1 - love my Shinkos - I went with stock rear size - need very little weight & grip like hell - bikebandit rocks !

Have you stood your VMAX straight up in the air when it used to break the tire loose with the other **** tires?

Re: shinko tires

Not yet - but now that I'm spraying I better be careful...

haha good point...

i run 170 in the rear and 120 up front...

altho i'm dealing with a wobble right now, not sure if its due to the tires.. danny and i have been speaking about it...

Re: shinko tires

Does anyone have anything to say about
some of the other tires out there ? I was
looking at some Avon Venoms. What about
the Bridgstones, Dunlops, Maxxis or Cheng shin's ?
Thanks,
Chris

i've heard cheng shin's are crap...

people that don't run shinkos run Metz's ME880s usually and love them... barely anyone i think runs bridge's or dunlops. i had a dunlop that only lasted like 2800 miles with NO burnouts.. for the price that is pathetic.

Re: shinko tires

Yea I had the Dunlop Qualifiers on mine when I got it - they are complete rubbish. Poor grip, **** thread design with a groove line in the middle making them very sensitive to all sorts of adverse road surfaces, and stupid slippery in the wet.

Re: shinko tires

Anyone heard anything about the Avons ?
Ive heard from some that they are supposed
to work really well but they mostly have touring
bikes or cruisers.
Thanks

Re: shinko tires

Found the Venom am42 in the new J&P catalogue.
They have the 150/90b15 74v for $147.99
and the 170/80-15 83h for $139.99.
In the front they only have the 100/90-18 57h
and the 120/90-18 71h. Would one of those front
sizes work ?
Thanks,
Chris

Re: shinko tires

I know. Heretic has 'em and they are awesome on dry pavement. I hear they aren't the best in rain though.

Re: shinko tires

I replace IRC tires with the Metzeler ME880s, front and rear. Now instead of the tire spinning any time I try to go fast, the bike grips a lot better. The other day, I was able to bring the front up an inch or two with some well-managed launches. I thought this was pretty good for my old beater (was going to say "frame-flexing wobbler" but then realized that that term is Lankee's copyrighted trademark). The Metzelers are definitely good tires. Next time I may try the Shinkos.

Re: Shinko 170/80 15 Info needed..

Has anyone know how many miles the Shinkos are
good for? The venoms are expensive but the claims
of 10,000 miles + could off set some of the cost. I
live in sticksville and don't know how to change these,
so this would be a load and haul the bike 80 miles to
the nearest shop type event.
Thanks

I ran the AVON Venom one time and took them off after 500 miles they were the worst tire I have ran on a VMAX

Re: Shinko 170/80 15 Info needed..

I have a little more than 2000 miles on my rear tire, and just put on a new front. I will need another rear or two this year as I'm looking at doing about 12K + miles this year, or at least I'm hoping to. I'm sure I'll do a couple burnouts this summer to skew my mileage results.
The one to ask is NaughtyG, he has over 5-6K on his mostly on the highway. He rides every day and in the Florida heat so his miles are adding up quick. There may be some others here with high mileage on their shinkos maybe they will speak up.

High Mileage Motorcycle Tires = Hard Compound.
Hard Compound motorcycle tires = Poor Traction.

This is a motorcycle not a tour bus we are talking about.

Why risk a hard high mileage tire to save get a few extra miles from.. I am going to bet that you wished you went for a higher traction softer tire when you come into that turn a little fast,, or have to drive home in the rain,, or even worse have to apply the brakes hard when that car pulls out in front of you.. think about somethings just arent worth saving a few nickels on....

Re: Shinko 170/80 15 Info needed..

Thanks Lankee,
Price was not main concern just thought a possibly higher
quality tire that last longer might pay off. Since you've
used both and the Shinkos seem to being having the best
reviews here and by yourself I'll probably roll with those.
Price is great also. Think I'll replace the rear with the slightly
larger one then replace the front after the current one
croaks.
Thanks for the input,
Chris

Re: Shinko 170/80 15 Info needed..

Chris

I just dont understand why some people look for the highest mileage tire when it comes to motorcycles. Even more so on a vehichle with 2 tires. Now I could see if you are driving a dually and have to replace 6 truck tires yes that can get expensive and I would most likely look for a high mileage tire for that application.
When it comes to motorcycles and even more so a powerful motorcycle like the VMAX my main concern is traction and smoothness.

I know not all here are weekend warrior dragracers laying down hard holeshots at 6500 RPMS,, but if these Shinkos can hold up to that kind of abuse and still provide me a safe ride topped out at 160 MPH that they are pretty damn good tires.

Here is my opinion....

If your the type that rides your VMAX hard such as wheelies, street races, drag strip passes SHINKO'S ALL THE WAY!!

If your more of the cruiser type then Metzler ME880's

I like the Metzler ME880s they are a great tire! They have more mileage in them then the Shinkos but they dont hook as great as the Shinkos in extreme racing conditions.

Chris you seem more like a ME880 Guy looking for some mileage but dont ride hard
