Too loud! I know rite?!?!

I've just purchased this 99 V-max and it's incredibly loud. Not harley davidson loud, but pretty doggone close. It's a Kerker. How can I tell if it's a 4-1 or 2-1? I can provide a better picture of the exhaust if you need.

I hate loud bikes. Yes it still needs to sound throaty, but it can be done with quiet pipes. *(I'm sure I will get a LOT of disagreements with most everyone) If this has to be removed at the front of the bike, who wants to trade me their stock pipes for these? Provided stock pipes are quieter.

it looks like you have a 4 -1 system, I have a stock pipes but slip on mufflers. You might look for a different slip on?

this is a slip on? it wasn't very clear on the manufacturers site if it was a full pipe or just a slip on.

That's right, it's a full header system. From what you're describing it sounds like the previous owner has done something to the baffle or maybe even the packing. It's pretty easy to tell, you can remove the three allen head screws from the rear and the baffle slides right out. You can check to see if the packing is still there. With that baffle it should be right along the lines of what you're saying you're looking for sound wise.

seems like such a waste to get rid of $1000 pipes for something quieter... I'm like a minority in that I don't like loud pipes. Maybe I can get a muffler to go on there....

Have Mark at marksperformance make you a quieter muffler. I'm sure Morley has some quieter mufflers that would fit those kerker headers.

I just added some Cobra slip ons on me 06 on Saturday. (I would have traded for the Kerkers for sure!) My stock pipes are perfect. They only have 3100 miles on them. Shoot me an offer if you are interested.

If the baffle is there but has no packing you can get baffle wrap from this ebay seller below. I have kerker slipons and used the 1/2" thick wrap he sells to repack the baffle. It gave it a nice tone.

You might have the 2 1/2" competition baffle in it. Very loud. If it does have one, change it out for the 1 1/2" . Mellow quite rumble. Take a pic of the end of muffler and we can tell you which one you have.

Mkay, I'll take a pic and post it. In the meantime, here's some video's I took of the bike and myself riding it. I'm having some issues with it idling. I've put some seafoam in it and hopefully that will solve the problem as I ride it a bit more.

Looks like for sure that it has NOT been modded in any way.. gods! I can't imagine how loud it would be had the pack been removed.

You have the full system, and it looks like the stage 7 carb kit as well (the stainless hose on the oil filler gives that away). As such it's tuned for a full system and going back to stock will mess it all up, it'll run too lean if it was properly set for a full system. That combo, properly tuned, can get you mid- 120's for rwhp, as opposed to stock, which is about 112.

If you really want to go back to stock, you'll need the headers, muffler, jets, airbox, breather line, and oil cap back since you likely have 4 individual pod filters under the faux tank. Otherwise you may have difficulties tuning it in. Your v-boost may be either unplugged or disconnected....do you hear the whirr.....whirr when you turn the key on?

I'd try to rebaffle the pipe you have. As said if you have the comp baffle swap it for the street, which is louder than stock but really not that bad....as in at highway speeds you don't really hear it over wind noise. Stock is predictably quiet.

I don't know why anyone would buy Cobra slip ons.....just said goodbye to 15-20hp compared to the stock muffler. Too little backpressure.

Measure your end cap, hard to tell by the pics, but it looks like either the 1 1/2 or 2 inch cap.
If it's 1 1/2...... It won't get any quieter than that without robbing tons of power.
You could try a different muffler to change the tone...which may seem quieter.

You may have the stage 7 kit on....I see the crank vent tube.....do you have pods on the carbs?

That could also be a reason for the rough idle.....always on boost.

I really don't plan on going onto the highway all that much, so noise is pretty crucial to me. Hell, it's rattling the neighbors windows and my kids won't go anywhere near it when it's running cause it's too loud, and that was the real reason, was to go riding with the kids that I got it.. OK, it's not but it's an added bonus. I will see if I can find some street baffles instead of the comp.

It does have the jet kit, pod air filters, and v-boost on full time (which I'd like to turn off but can't figure out where the other end of the plug is) so probably pretty important to keep everything stock... just different muffler.

It does not sound that bad, mine is a little less but I do not have the stock mufflers / twin brother racing slipons. You know it is mine when I come tooling through the subdivision, wife claims my dog perks before she can hear the bike. Then when I get with in about 10 or so houses away she can hear me with doors and windows all closed, dog runs to back door lol.

well it really is hard to determine how loud it is based on a video. I should have a db meter around here somewhere....
