NY is a right to work state but the scumbag unions use that as part of their barganing, ie you want ot work here, you join the union or you don't get hired, is in the agreement with the employer.

One word, ILLEGAL.... Something sounds fishy here.

Unions originally had a good intention in the beginning, imo. Now, between the gov't and the unions, with the auto ind in mind, well, look at it, a money pit. I withdrew from my union because part of my dues went to elect someone I wouldn't begin to vote for. Plus, they were pressing me to vote for these same people. Just had to make a decision on my convictions.

Federal law allows you to inform your union of your intent NOT to be a member each year and receive a portion of your "lunch money/dues" back. Most unions require a new notice of your intent each year, to be received by them during a certain month, and the letter must contain certain info from you, otherwise, they can assume you want to automatically join back and they will restart collecting full membership level dues.

You would then be considered to be an Agency Fee Payor and not a union member. You won't get to vote on union meeting stuff, and they don't get to buy elections with your money. They are supposed to still be required to represent you in any/all contract negotiations and/or disputes you may have with your employer - hence the portion of dues your state won't allow you out of.

I tried this where I work. I didn't make many friends out of the deal, but I did save a bundle of money - more money than I could of saved if I'd switched to Geico. :biglaugh:

I'll have to look into that, unions are some snakey MF's but so is mangement.

For you IBEW guys;

My dad was IBEW from 1942 till 1973 when he had to go non-union with his second shop just to be able to stay in business.

He ran oil field and industrial service out in West Texas (Pecos) running around 5-6 trucks most the time.

He sold his first shop and did a 5 year "no compete" clause with the buyer in order to sell it.

Due to the no compete clause he "traveled" for 5 years and hit all the big ass jobs like Glenn Canyon Dam, nuclear plants etc.

When he opened his second shop in the early 70's there was no way he could go union and make a buck because the union had basically priced itself out of business.

He was also a "FLE" .
I still have his FLE card.

Any of you guys ever hear of them? They were a sort of secret order within the union, somewhat subversive in efforts to keep the union true to it's original intent rather than just lining the pockets on the top officials. Membership in the FLE's also helped travelers in jumping to the top of the books in foriegn locals due to being helped be local FLE's. Perhaps not fair but that's the way it was

He was a hardcore believer in the Milleresque image of what unions did for the little guy.
But after traveling for 5 years and seeing what the union had really become he couldn't stand it due to lazy shiftless, "not my job" attitudes of guys who would take as much as they could and give as little as they could. It totally ruined it for him.
