A few years ago, the then 30 year old fuel lines started deteriorating. All kinds of problems, but mainly gas pouring out of the carbs, leaving puddles on the garage floor. Removing the float bowl drain screws showed a lot of black debris in the bowls. I did as Adam suggested, and pumped fuel through the carbs, after replacing every inch of hose from the tank to the carbs. That did the trick. I gave it a dose of Seafoam " for luck", and haven't had a problem since.
I realize the problem I had isn't the same as you're dealing with, but in my case, pumping gas through the carbs, into a clear jar to see the residue worked fine..
