I started polishing my oil pan today. When i took my exhaust off i notice i have a aluminium oil pan. I should take it off the bike to polish but i have a neat little nibbler tool i got cheep from harbor freight. It has a little buffer wheel and a little fine wire brush wheel. It seems to be gitting the job done. It wont be a perfect mirror finish but i think it looks alot better than it did.

I just had thought is it a pain to remove the center stand. I want to paint it with ceramic engine paint. also could do a nice job polishing under the bike with it out of the way.

The spring is typically the hardest part to take off/ put back on but not too tuff once you have done it a couple of times. The two bolts are easy to take off/ reinstall. I usually put on the ctrstand to change the oil/ tire changes/ etc. then take it off again without ever putting on the spring.

Thanks rb I got a good look at it today and was woundering about the spring.!

2 busy days ...
Coolant leaks from the sensor and the thermostats are finally gone (I hope).
So I replaced the coolant and changed the oil.

Finally I installed a set of LED found on ebay here.
Full metal body and really bright.
Thanks to my MV integrated taillight, I didn't have to mod the dashboard or to correct the flashing rate. Good surprise :p

I Finally installed a ZX14 R/R and rewired. I cannot wait to get that power distribution fused block in order to get ride of the spaghetti under the seat.

Actually rode today for about 15 miles to put it away and start getting ready for the ISCA show later in Jan. won't have all my mods for the year done by the show but at least some done by then. As long as its all done by Thunder I'll be happy.

I took my '85 on its last ride today...sad very sad but it will go to a new home tomorrow and I will start sinking the cash into the '95 The Monkey gets what the Monkey wants right?

Took my youngest daughter for her first ride yesterday. Did a little riding today even. Check out this latest bike we will be shipping to a customer in the next few weeks! It's a 2012 Goldwing. Very nice bike!

Sean

Picked-up a nearly-new (3 mo. old) Nelson-Rigg sportbike cover for $20 off the local C.L.! Whatta deal!

1-6-12:
About to put my third tank of gas into the bike since I put it back onto the road after a multi-year layoff. Running good, now time to do some cosmetics. Today I removed the headlight bezel (rim) & used my muslin wheel & Meguiar's Metal Polish to make it shine. I also did the rear view mirror head. I mounted my flyscreen, PC'ed to match the scoops, handlebar risers, & sissy bar/pass. grab-bars.

Stopped-by three different friends who are Yamaha mechanics or are retired from dealerships as them. They all were around for the release of '85. I showed them my 'Lazarus' bike returned to the road after a layoff of 12+ years and they were pleased to see it working. Two of them were just going out the door to deliver a clean grey XS-11 to a new home. They care for a multimillionaire attorney's collection of rare & collector bikes & cars. They are always buying & selling for the 'patron.'

So all in all an interesting day.

got most my stuff done with powder from my brother.

started my steering stem bearing replacement. got the top bearing (obviously) and race out. gonna tackle the bottom ones this week. question tho i hit the 'seat' on the top race by accident once and it bent up into where the race goes. i was thinking of just dremeling it back down so its flush or a little under. is that a good idea? not sure the race would sit flat if i left it as-is. pic attached.

also, just wanted to go over the bottom removal, anyone know where dannys posts are about the removal? i thought he had pics too.

As I recall, mention has been made of putting some weld around the bearing surface, which does two things. One, it heats the race metal, and two, it gives you something to get a 'purchase' upon w/your drift pin of choice. The combination of heat & someplace to hammer (the weld placed circumferentially-around the outer race) will make it release fairly easily.

The alternative is a small die grinder & carefully cutting across the bottom outer race in one or two places until you release its mechanical grip in the steering head due to its now-reduced diameter. Another member also suggested then using a barrel abrasive wheel to make a couple of "eyebrows" 180 degrees-apart in the thick metal neck of the lower steering head, so next time (we all should live so-long!) you can easily throw your drift punch into the eyebrows and tap-out the outer race, w/alternating blows.

G, I would definitely hit that with the dremel. Even if you undercut it just a touch it is not going to hurt. You would be better off that way making sure that the race sits all the way against the stop.

Not sure where Dannys post is. I followed his advice though and used my dremel to create a tiny recess just above the lower bearing race. I probably could have went deeper but I decided to stop as soon as I could get just a touch of my punch on it. Once I was able to get the punch on it I pounded it down a bit and worked my way around the race to the left and right of the recess.

if i had access and/or knew how to weld i'd do that, but unfortunately no luck there. i'm gonna probably have to do the dremel technique.

yea thats what i was thinking the side wall and rest of the seat will hold the race where it needs to be even if its slightly recessed.

you just did one tiny cut? was it closest to the bike?

No cutting, just a little grinding. Yes, I did it on the side of the head tube closest to the bike. I made just a small recess about 1" long.

yea i meant grinding. and really, that makes more sense then. i was thinking like 1/4"

Got the rest of my bag-o-goodies for the archangel, in the mail today. :)
Placed order for my new muffs and pillion. Don't know how long it will take for the pipes to get here, but I'm not going to have the bike out until the end of april.
I don't mind the pillion I made, but I don't give rides enough to have that big 'ol marshmallow on the back. So I've ordered the proper seat that goes with the tail section from Boxenstopp. I think it will look 100x better.
I'll open the bag-o-goodies later on this week and possibly get it all planned, mocked and finalized buy this weekend.
I have a guitar to finish and get out and wood to laminate and put aside to age for a neck-through-body guitar I'm making. But the plan is to have the VMax taken care of, as far as the new mod, before school starts up again on the 19th.
