I started the long process of polishing a set of valve covers last night. two hours into the project and i'm half through Cover 1's first of three planned gritting sessions. Gonna get some dinner and finish off the cover and then call it a day. Yes I know I know...Drill Sargent Monkey is making me clean the barracks with a toothbrush....call it a labor of love...

Pc'd my 85,(new to me thanks to Texas Tornado) front wheel, black satin. I looked at it and decided something is missing. So, I started polishing the lips. That means the rear wheel needs the same treatment. I like it. I can polish a little strip, I used to do the whole wheel. Waiting on a spacer washer and new radial. Should be here soon.

I like that look too Steve. I am toying with putting stripes on my Carrozzeria's, not sure if I want red or a silver. Desicions, decisions....

Finally cleaned all my moving boxes out of the garage so I have room to play with the max. :D Getting ready to paint it so had to clean everything out, and I actually built a workbench while I was at it.

Now for a question. I know removing an engine is a very involved process, but waiting till next winter is not an option with the second gear problem. My buddy is VERY mechanically inclined so I want to do it while he is here, but he deploys in September. It is the rainy season. So I am thinking maybe now IS the right time?

What am I getting myself into? I know my buddy will let me know, but was hoping for some insight before I bring it up to him.

Put my new brake stay on the bike (thanks again Bikesponsors.com) Tuned out well, COO does some nice work.

And I finished up the guitar that matches my bike's color scheme so it will be ready to pose with my bike as well. I don't know what to call it... The V-Axe? l:rofl_200:

Take pictures - lots of them! Then as you are unbolting some sort of system to identify bolts/ parts is imperative - I used plastic bags with a paragraph on the back explaining what was in the bag. I took off the swingarm while I was at it. It took me a few nights after work, with the help of my brother, to get it out. Take time to shoot several pics from different angles because even though you think you're taking enough picture, your not!:biglaugh: I bet it would take about 6 hours for a couple guys coud accomplish the task.

+1 To Brian and another thing I do is take a piece of cardboard, a box or a piece of styrofaom sheet and draw out the side covers, oil pan and engine case. Punch holes in the same locations as all the bolts on the cover/case. Remove the bolt and place it at the same location on the cardboard/foam template.

This takes the guess work when you go to install them back on the engine.

Thanks. It honestly really depends on if my friend is up to it. Good idea about labeling bags and taking photos.

I might be able to snag some evidence bags from work lol.

yup!

Im in the process of doing this as we speak... Engine goes back together tonight. Heres a couple things I found... Get the service manual and use it.. Dont bother removing the heads.no need. Step by step take the parts off... Bag the bolts with labels. All great ideas.. The cases are held together with 36 bolts... I did a cardboard template numbered 1 to 36 and put them in it... A couple wont clear the exhaust manifolds... Leave em in therr just make sure they are loosened completely. Take your time.. Double check... Recheck... Be mindful of the dowel pins cause if one falls out you will be wondering where it goes later and the only guy that could help me was sean morley lol.... And i highly recommend getting one of his undercut transmissions... Quality is awesome. Replace your shift forks too... Oh and might aswell do the hd oiling kit from morley while u at it.
If you have any questions on removal... Email me at [email protected] . sean answered a lot of questions for me so i figure i should pay it forward so to speak.

If you dont have the service manual i can email it to you... Or u can download it here http://vmaxoutlaw.com/tech/VMX12-Service-Manual.pdf

Hope this helps.

Its not hard... If u have patience.. Follow directions well.. And can turn a wrench plus have a good jack for under the engine and a helping hand you should be fine.

Its a lot easier than replacing the flywheel on my 1997 chevy pickup while on your back in a garage lol...
More fun too. Kinda wish i went in to be a motorcycle mechanic... I envy sean morley...

Installing Progressive Fork Springs (Stock Height) and replaced Fork Seals.

EDIT:
One side went Perfectly the other side the Bottom Hex Head Bolt Stripped, so I'm going to have to deal with it tomorrow.

Got my front z6 Metzler delivered. Went to the local shops for dyna beads. Closed after a 32 mile ride. Schedule on line said open till 5pm. So much for supporting the local shops. I did get new valve stems from an open one though. I'll prolly get the beads from Dennis Kirk unless someone here sells them.

Damn, I get it two days in a row?

Well today. I stripped the bike. Not much to the thing without the motor.
